Chapter Fourteen

“This is a bad idea.” I sat cross-legged on the floor in Bane’s living room. He’d moved the furniture out of the way and poured a protective circle of salt around me.

“You agreed to it,” Bane reminded me. He’d changed into slacks and a cowl-necked sweater, taking away his lovely bare skin and the one reason I’d been happy to stay here. Drooling over Bane’s chest and abs had acted like a tranquilizer. Now that it was gone, all my misgivings were clawing to come out.

“Yes, but stripping me of my magic seems a bit extreme.” It had all sounded so reasonable when he’d laid out his plan. He’d cast a spell that would bind my powers. But, again, he’d been wearing nothing but a towel at the time. I could hardly be blamed for agreeing.

“We’re not stripping your powers, merely blocking them for the time being.” He lit a bundle of sage and waved the smoke toward the four corners of the room. “If your powers are blocked, then no one will be able to sense them. They’ll think you nothing but a human, and a human wouldn’t be the Chosen One. You can live a normal life until we figure this out.”

I cocked my head. “And without my powers, there’s less chance of me destroying the world, right?”

He paused, hand raised.

“Be honest. You think the prophecy is about me.” I twisted my ring around my thumb. “What sort of odds are you giving me? Fifty-fifty that I’ll be the savior or that I’ll be the destroyer? Eighty-twenty?”

He placed the smoking sage into a copper bowl and rubbed his temple. “I do think the prophecy is about you. That spell I did earlier to find you—”

“The one that blew up the third floor?”

“It didn’t blow—” He blew out a breath. “It was just the one room that was destroyed, but yes, that one. The spell was to locate the Chosen One. It was complicated. Dangerous. But’s it is an accurate spell.”

He gave me a sympathetic look that struck me straight down to my soul. “And it showed me you.”

Complicated could mean he’d made a mistake. Bane was a good mage, maybe one of the best, but no one was one hundred percent accurate. Hope still lived.

I straightened out a smudge in the salt circle. “This… this is reversible, right?” I might not want to be the Chosen One, but I still wanted to be a witch. I couldn’t imagine going back to my life as a regular human.

His eyes flickered. “Of course. If you want it to be.”

“And what if I actually am supposed to save the world? How will I do that with no powers?”

He raised his eyebrow. “I hate to state the obvious, but your magical capabilities are spotty at best. I think the slew of powerful and competent witches who currently exist will be able to take up your slack.”

I nodded. He was right. And this was for the best. I sucked in a deep breath as he began chanting.
